Private Joel Henry Hardin was born in Oldham County, Kentucky on December 18, 1838, the son of Warner Hardin and Catherine Ann Hitt. A farmer, Hardin was 5’8 ¼”, with a light complexion, gray eyes and dark hair. Private Hardin was discharged on March 12, 1863 at Louisville on a certificate of disability based upon chronic dysentery and heart disease. He married Frances Coons on October 6, 1863 in Oldham County, Kentucky. They had one son, James T. (1865-1895). After Frances’ death in 1867, he married Laura Hite on June 25, 1868. They had two sons, Charles Warner (1872-1959) and William (1877-1877) and two daughters, Lelia Hardin Gregg (1870-1948) and Hitie Hardin Pinnell (1882-1979). Hardin died in Prospect, Kentucky on November 16, 1922.
