Remembering Private Noah Elbert, Company A of the Fifteenth Kentucky

Noah Elbert was born on November 25, 1838 in either Louisville, Kentucky or Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany (sources differ), the son of Joseph John Elbert and Eva Katherine Mattoff. He worked as a teamster before the war. Elbert was 6’1/2” with a dark complexion, hazel eyes and black hair. Elbert was captured at the Battle of Perryville, October 8, 1862, and exchanged on December 10, 1863. He married Barbara Bosemer in 1865, and they had four sons: Joseph V. (1866-1889), William Herman (1871-1947), Theodore Frederick (1872-1937) and Henry Bosemer Elbert (1882-1961) and four daughters: Elizabeth Catherine Elbert Harbaugh (1868-1959), Margaret Louise Elbert Brown (1875-1944), Agnes Mae Elbert Russell (1879-1976) and Lorena Elbert Stepro (1886-1960). Elbert died in Harrison County, Indiana, on May 13, 1918.
